LWV Honors Members for Raising Public Awareness about Water Issues

The League of Women Voters of Sedona-Verde Valley honored two members at the annual membership meeting May 1. In recognition of their work on water issues, Dorothy Hores and Barbara Litrell were presented a poster of Clear Creek by Sedona artist Madison Dare .

For several years Hores served as program chairman on the League's leadership team, overseeing all League study items. The League adopted water as a priority issue in 1999.  Early on, information gathering and study resulted in an official LWV position statement on water, which is used to guide League responses for land use planning, citizen education, and legislative action. In 2001, she provided leadership, along with other co-sponsors, for a citizens' forum to heighten public awareness of Verde Valley water uses.

At that time, Barbara Litrell took on leadership of the League's Water Committee, chairing a conference of water groups, which served as the catalyst for a briefing for Arizona Legislators and formation of the North Central Arizona Regional Watershed Consortium.  The consortium actively considers and collectively speaks out about water issues.

Hores obtained League of Women Voters recognition of water as a state-wide priority issue. As part of the state's emphasis, Litrell's committee declared March 2004 as Water Awareness Month in the Verde Valley. The month of activities and events  included a parade appearance by Blarney the Bass, water conservation workshops, the first annual Verde River Run, a Water "301" forum that delved into management issues, teacher workshop, and a water awareness festival with exhibits and entertainment. Intense media coverage, library exhibits, a poster contest, and other events capped the highly successful effort.
